One of the most fascinating pieces of trackwork a layout can have is a double slip switch. Typically used in the throat of passenger terminals, they can also be found just about anywhere on a railroad. In addition to looking great, they are also a major space saver when used properly. A double slip switch is two opposing direction turnouts overlaid onto each other. So a double slip switch can save the space of one complete turnout if you have a situation where two turnouts are laid opposing each other on the same line. You can build double and single slip switches using a Fast Tracks Double Slip Switch assembly fixture. We only have matching QuickSticks for Double Slip Switches, and we recommend adding some to your order. Single Slip Switches can be completed using individual wood ties, also available from Fast Tracks. If you order a Fast Tracks assembly fixture, we highly recommend that you consider purchasing matching PointForm and StockAid filing tools. This will make the construction of the switch and frog points much easier. Our #4, #5, and #6 slip switches use a solid frog in the centre frogs. That means there are no moving points in the middle of the switch. #8 slip switches have a much lower frog angle and must be built with moveable point frogs to be reliable. This adds to the time it takes to make this switch, as there are 12 moving points in the switch.

Wow, this assembly makes a complex task into an enjoyable and highly precise project. A slight modification is in order when building a double slip as the fixture seems to have been made for a single slip even though it has milled throw-bars in the crossover area. The rails in the crossover are not static but are closure rails themselves while the instructions call for these rail points (toads) to be soldered in place. I am sure a revision of the instructions will be available in the future. So far i have built 5 of these beasts and they work perfectly. This fixture brings JOY to model railroading. Thank you Fast Tracks for giving us a fantastic product.

I thought building a double-slip turnout might be a bit too daunting for me, but this tool made it so much easier than I thought! I noticed the same undocumented adjustments necessary as noted by a previous commenter, so I have nothing to add there. I did have a bit of a problem getting the rail bases to sit squarely on the copper tie strips. This made soldering a bit more difficult for me. I do not have this problem with my other turnout fixtures, so I'm guessing my fixture may not have been cut correctly. Either the tie slots are cut too deep, or the rail flangeways not cut deep enough

I like long turnouts, I cannot lie. And for low angle crossings, single or double slip switches like this number 8 this jig certainly makes the task simpler and easier ensuring great results. A double slip number 8 has 12 points and places where the points join the stock and closure rails. But like every complex assembly the pieces are made and go together one piece at a time. This jig just ensures that the parts are made to the correct lengths and fit together with absolute precision. The result is a complex looking piece of track work that anyone can build and will is both a joy to look at and operate your trains through. I like to build some oddball and different turnouts that aren’t typically prototypical. One I’m thinking about is an Sn3 double slip and perhaps an Sn3 very shallow angle crossing with number 10 frogs. Just for the fun and challenge of it and the big grin it gives me when complete. So, if you have ever thought about a slip switch I can’t recommend these FastTracks jigs enough to help you create as many beautiful looking and operating ones as your head desires.
